Surfing

Sri Lanka a tropical island ideal for surfing. From the first surfer, rusty Miller in 1965 it is a bucket list activity and a sport that everyone looks forward in doing.
Sri Lanka has two distinct seasons effecting either sides of the island in different months of the year.
The first brings morning offshore winds to the western side of the country centered around Hikkaduwa from the month of November to April.
The second season brings offshore winds to the eastern side of the country centered around Arugam Bay.
The sea temperature remains steady about 27 Celsius the year around.
As for the surf destinations there are three main coasts ideal for surfers. They are the Southwest coast, the South coast and the East coast.

  • Hikkaduwa falls under the Southwest Coasts. The best season is between December and March. For the Southwest Coast the monsoon season is from April/May to October. It is not a season to go surfing in this coast.
  • Unawatuna, Ahangama, Weligama and Mirissa are in the South Coast that are renowned as surfing destinations. The best season is between November to April.
  • Arugambay falls under the East Coast surf destinations. It is well known for its great surf and is popular among all. The season to visit the East Coast is between July and August. There are several popular point breaks including Ullah Point, Pottuvil Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. ‘Surf Point’ that breaks at the headland in front of Arugam Bay is suitable for body surfing and beginners; Pottuvil Point situated on a deserted beach north of Arugam Bay is more suitable for experienced surfers; and Crocodile Rock another challenging surf point is located south of Arugam Bay.
