Whale watching season is December to April where you will get the chance to spot these gigantic mammals swimming alongside your vessel. Mirissa, Trincomalee and Kalpitiya are the trips you should make if you want to experience Whale Watching. Blue Whales and Sperm Whales are mainly the two types of whales that can be spotted since their migration path is close to the Dondra Point making it a 95% percent chance to spot them. There are experienced local guides that can lead you to the locations where they can be viewed. One of the best places in the world to see one of the only recorded resident blue whale colonies in their natural habitat. According to BBC 30 Blue Whales were sighted in a single day! These whales watching expeditions can be done in a fully insured trawler boat where the where the trip will be a 3hrs trip. Apart from whales there is a high chance to see Spinner Dolphins in Dondra. You need to avoid choppy rough days where morning ours are the best. Kalpitiya is another destination for Whale watching. But in Kalpitiya whale sightings are not that frequent compared to Dondra.
Apart from the Blue Whales and the Sperm Whales you will also get the chance to see Bryde’s Whales, Killer Whales, False Killer, Dwarf, Melon Head Whales, Cuvier’s Beaked Whales and if lucky the Indian Blue Whales.
